Remember when saving money at the grocery store meant sitting at the kitchen table with the Sunday newspaper, a pair of scissors and a stack of coupons?
Well, the coupons haven't disappeared. They've just moved into your phone.
If you've downloaded your grocery store's app but only use it to check store hours or order groceries, you could be overlooking some of its most useful features: digital coupons, weekly sales, personalized deals, shopping lists, rewards and, with certain apps, the ability to save your favorite products so you don't have to search for them every week. Some apps can even notify you about new deals.
You don't have to become an extreme couponer or drive all over town chasing discounts. Start with the stores where you already shop.
The Quick Take
Start with two or three grocery stores you already visit. Organize their apps in one folder, save regular purchases where possible, check weekly deals and clip eligible digital coupons before shopping. The goal isn't to spend an hour hunting for discounts. It's to spend a few minutes making sure you're not overlooking savings on groceries you were already planning to buy.

MAKE IT WERK: Create a Grocery Savings Folder
MAKE IT WERK
One folder. All your grocery savings.
Create a folder on your phone called Grocery Savings and move your grocery store apps into it. Add any cash-back apps you regularly use, such as Ibotta. Before your next grocery trip, open that folder, check your favorite stores and see what's on sale. No more scrolling through pages of apps while you're standing in the aisle trying to remember where you saw that coupon.
On an iPhone, drag one app onto another to create a folder, then rename it. Android phones offer similar home-screen folders, although the steps vary by device.
Put your most frequently used stores first. You don't need every grocery app in America—just the ones that make sense for your shopping routine.
Save Your Favorites and Let the Deals Come to You
Think about the things you buy over and over again: coffee, eggs, your favorite yogurt, laundry detergent, paper towels. That one brand of cereal somebody in your household absolutely refuses to live without.
Instead of searching for those products every week, see whether your grocery app lets you save favorites, build reusable lists or find previously purchased items. Some apps use your shopping history to surface personalized deals. Publix supports favorite items, purchase history, lists and personalized offers; Kroger supports personalized coupons and optional notifications about new deals. Publix mobile app · Kroger mobile app
Save your regular purchases. Turn on useful weekly-ad emails or notifications where available. Check those products against current promotions before shopping.
WERK TIP
Be selective with notifications. Weekly specials and offers for products you actually buy? Useful. A notification for every promotion? Probably not. Saving a product as a favorite does not guarantee a price-drop alert; check your particular app's features and settings.
And remember: just because your favorite coffee is on sale doesn't mean you need six bags. Stock up only when you'll use the product and the purchase fits your budget.

What About Aldi and Other Regional Grocers?
Aldi is worth checking for weekly specials and shopping-planning tools, even though its savings model differs from traditional digital-coupon loyalty programs. Depending on where you live, your usual store may be Wegmans, Hannaford, Stop & Shop, Food Lion or Giant Eagle. Check its official app or website for current local features. You don't need to change stores simply because another chain has a more elaborate app.
App downloads: Use the iPhone and Android links beside each retailer. Kroger regional banners require their own app; follow the official Kroger mobile-app page for the appropriate banner. Safeway and Publix official app pages provide both platforms.
Your Five-Minute Pre-Shopping Savings Routine
- Make your list first. Check your pantry and refrigerator so you don't buy what you already have.
- Open your Grocery Savings folder. Check weekly ads at your usual stores.
- Search for items on your list. Review favorites, personalized deals and eligible digital coupons.
- Compare final prices and package sizes. Decide whether an extra store stop is actually worth your time and gas.
- Clip your coupons and check cash-back offers. Confirm your loyalty account is ready before checkout.
A $2 coupon doesn't automatically make a product cheaper than another brand. Compare the final price and the quantity you're getting. Driving across town to save $1.50 on one item may not be a bargain.
Can You Combine Grocery App Deals With Cash-Back Apps?
Sometimes—but don't assume every discount can be stacked. A store sale, a digital coupon and a separate cash-back offer may have different rules. Check each offer's terms, especially restrictions on combining manufacturer coupons and cash back.
If you're new to cash-back apps, read our Ibotta review, where I share how I've earned more than $1,600 from purchases I was already making and what I've learned along the way.
Calling All Super WERKers: How Much Did You Really Save?
If you love finding a great deal, why not track exactly how much you're saving?
I've used a spreadsheet to record an item's regular price, sale price and every additional eligible discount or cash-back offer I could apply. Watching those savings add up can be half the fun. Sometimes the right combination of offers brings an item's effective cost to zero—or even leaves you with more rewards than you spent.
Here's a hypothetical example—not a current offer:
| Savings layer | Amount |
|---|---|
| Regular price | $8.00 |
| Store sale price | $6.00 |
| Eligible digital coupon | −$1.50 |
| Cash back earned | −$3.00 |
| Final effective cost | $1.50 |
| Effective savings | $6.50 (81.25%) |
That's an $8 product with an effective cost of $1.50 if every offer can be combined. Cash back received later isn't the same as a discount at checkout, so track both separately.

Bonus WERK: Get Paid While You're Already Grocery Shopping
What if your grocery trip could do more than save you money? Field Agent offers paid retail assignments that can involve checking displays, taking photos, answering questions or participating in Buy & Try activities. Depending on the assignment, you may need to purchase a product and provide feedback; reimbursement can be full or partial and is separate from the stated job payment. Always check the instructions, time limit, qualifying product and reimbursement terms before accepting. Field Agent's official job guidance.
MAKE IT WERK
Check for relevant assignments before a grocery trip you're already making. An eligible assignment at your usual store could make an ordinary errand more rewarding—but only if the compensation justifies your time and expenses. Don't assume Field Agent reimbursements can be combined with unrelated coupon or cash-back promotions unless the job explicitly permits it.
Watch Out for These Grocery App Mistakes
- Forgetting to clip. Seeing an offer doesn't necessarily activate it.
- Selecting the wrong store. Promotions and stock vary by location.
- Missing the fine print. Watch expiration dates, sizes, quantity requirements and offer limits.
- Assuming discounts stack. Check retailer, manufacturer and cash-back terms.
- Buying just because it's on sale. A discount on something you don't need may not save you anything.
- Skipping the receipt check. Confirm the expected discounts applied before leaving.
WERK NOTE
A great deal is only great if you needed it.
Your app might show hundreds of offers. That doesn't mean hundreds of things belong in your cart. Start with what you need, then use the app to find a better price.
Your Next Grocery Trip Starts Before You Leave Home
You don't have to become an expert couponer to make grocery apps useful. Start with your usual stores. Create your Grocery Savings folder. Save regular purchases where that feature is available and turn on notifications that genuinely help you.
Then spend five minutes checking weekly specials, comparing prices and clipping coupons. Some weeks the savings will be small. Other weeks you might find a deal worth celebrating. The goal is to make smart shopping a habit.
The groceries are already on your list. Make those apps WERK before the money leaves your wallet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are grocery store apps free?
Most major grocery chains offer free shopping apps and standard loyalty programs. Some also sell optional memberships with additional benefits. You generally don't need a paid membership to browse a weekly ad or use standard digital coupons.
Do I have to shop online to use digital coupons?
No. Many retailers let you clip coupons in the app and redeem them in-store using a loyalty card, app barcode or registered phone number. Follow the instructions for your particular store.
Can I save favorite products and receive sale notifications?
Depending on the app, you may be able to save favorites, access purchase history, receive personalized offers or opt into deal notifications. Saving a product doesn't guarantee an automatic price-drop alert.
Should I download every grocery store app?
No. Start with two or three stores you already visit. Add others only if they help your actual shopping routine.
Can I use grocery coupons and Ibotta together?
Sometimes. It depends on the retailer and the individual offer. Read the terms before assuming a digital coupon and cash-back reward can be combined.
